United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)

Over the past few years cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UNOOSA has significantly strengthened. Experts from the National Space Agency of Kazakhstan take part in regular sessions of the COPUOS, and the COPUOS Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and Legal Subcommittee, as well as working group sessions. During these sessions Kazakh experts hold meetings with their foreign counterparts and make statements on various agenda items, informing the Member States about Kazakhstan’s achievements in the field of outer space, the space launches of objects, and provide peer reviews of the legal and technical aspects of international space activities.

Kazakhstan's efforts in the field of space activities are aimed at peaceful exploration and use of outer space for solving problems of social and economic development, natural resources management and strengthening national security.

Priority area of cooperation includes knowledge sharing with the COPUOS in the space sphere. Of particular interest are the development of space technologies that are used in long-distance learning, climate change, weather forecasts, emergency prevention, responsible use of natural resources, health and medicine. Another priority area of cooperation is develop activities of the COPUOS to elaborate more efficient and effective mechanisms for international regulation of space activities, ensure equal access to space and use of research results in the interests of all States, regardless of their economic development.

High level visit

Mr. Talgat Musabayev, the Chairman of the National Space Agency of Kazakhstan, took part in the historic 54th session of the COPUOS, which marked the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight and the 50th anniversary of the first session of the COPUOS. The visit of the famed space pilot of Kazakhstan, his participation in numerous celebratory events and his meetings with his colleagues – astronauts enhanced our country’s image and served to improve its cooperation with the UNOOSA.
